Malachi 3
Scripture Reading: Read Malachi Chapter 3.
Christian Generosity:
Malachi 3:8 - “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. (NIV)
This verse in Malachi is often the go-to verse the pastor uses to beat people up about giving. But remember, it was written in an Old Testament context where God required the Israelites to give several tithes. It’s unfortunate when this text is weaponized to teach tithing, that is incorrect. But there is no doubt that God has called Christians to a life of generosity.
Understanding this verse and applying it to our lives in the light of the New Testament is critical. The Apostle Paul speaks of giving on more than one occasion. For example, Paul speaks of generosity in 2nd Corinthians 8:2-3 – “In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own,” (NIV)
Some use these verses from Paul to justify their lack of generosity. But Paul commended the poor believers from Macedonia because they gave generously and with a deep sense of joy. Their love for Christ drove them to give generously.
The point of biblical giving is not a cold standard where I am either robbing God or not. Many in the church today tithe faithfully but have no joy in giving; that’s unfortunate. We should give generously to the work of God. I believe tithing is a good, healthy practice for Christians. But we should have such a heart for God that our giving is rooted in our love for Christ.
Prayerfully Consider: Lord, how do you want me to honor you financially and support your work with the resources you’ve given me?
