Malachi 2

Scripture Reading:  Read Malachi Chapter 2.

Sinful Marriage:

Malachi 2:11 – “Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.” (NIV)

One of the most significant problems in the church today is the same problem of God’s people marrying pagans in Malachi’s day.  The Old Testament and New Testament alike are consistent in the condemnation of believers marrying non-believers.  Unfortunately, we seem to be afraid of offending today, so much so that we’re scared of confronting a believer for marrying someone who doesn’t know Jesus as they do.

I’m not suggesting that we respond with cruelty or hate.  Quite the opposite, I suggest we respond with gentleness, respect, and love.  We should confront and challenge them in love because their decision as a believer to marry a non-believer is both sinful and a guarantee for marriage and family problems.  Notice that this is a standard for believers, not unbelievers.  Contrary to popular belief, if you’re not married yet, you can walk away from that relationship before making a life-long commitment.

This problem does not pertain only to marriage; we must begin to take our cues from the Word of God rather than the Hallmark channel. When we find ourselves out of alignment with God’s truth, we must repent of our sins and return to God. What a powerful message we have that the Lord is in the business of pouring out grace upon those who repent and believe.
