Nahum 2
Scripture Reading: Read Nahum Chapter 2.
Taunting the “Lions”:
Nahum 2:11 – “Where now is the lions’ den, the place where they fed their young, where the lion and lioness went, and the cubs, with nothing to fear?” (NIV)
We typically expect taunting on the basketball court, but we don’t usually see taunting on the pages of scripture. Nineveh was like a den of lions; they would devour their enemies far and wide with vicious brutality. But now Nahum is taunting them as he sees God's vision of what will happen to wicked Nineveh. The once vicious den of lions will be destroyed.
This wealthy, powerful city was at one time the pinnacle of materialism. They may have been mighty lions to the nations around them, but the lion of materialism would eventually devour them.
Nineveh, a city consumed with itself, was fixated on wealth, power, and sex. This self-absorption led to their downfall, as God, angered by their sin, destroyed the city. Despite their material wealth, they were not truly secure. Their security was a facade, built on their own accomplishments and military might.
The problem for the Ninevites wasn’t that they had material possessions or that they had accomplished great things. The problem is they had rejected God and instead pursued their own accomplishments and desires. This self-serving spirit eventually led to Nineveh viciously devouring other nations for their own self-serving goals. This is the trajectory of the sin of materialism; eventually, it will devour you like a lion.
Prayer: Lord, I pray that your truth will rule my life and that your Spirit will lead and fill me. Help me, Lord, not to be consumed by the things of this world but to be consumed with your will.
