Micah 6
Scripture Reading: Read Micah Chapter 6.
The Impossible Task:
Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (NIV)
A while back, I set out to install a garage door at my house without hiring someone else to do the work. I thought to myself: how hard could it be? That kind of thought usually foreshadows a disaster to come. I purchased the materials and started reading the directions, only to feel completely overwhelmed. Eventually, I got the door and the opener installed, but it took days of research and talking with people who were handier than me to accomplish the task.
The truth is, I couldn’t do it on my own; I needed lots of help from others. This verse is probably the most well-known verse from Micah; it lays before us a significant challenge:
- To act justly.
- To love mercy.
- To walk humbly with your God.
Although this verse may look inspirational on your wall, the more you read it and really think about what these three statements mean, the more discouraged you may become. As I read this verse today, I felt a little like I did reading the directions for that garage door opener: There’s no way I can do this on my own.
I am thankful today that God provides for what He requires. God wants His people to do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him, but He provides His spirit to produce that fruit within us.
