What Keeps You Up At Night?
Micah 2:1 – “Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it out because it is in their power to do it.” (NIV)
It’s been a while now, but I’ve personally experienced the process of buying and selling a home a few times. In that process, I can remember having difficulty sleeping on multiple occasions. I struggle with worry, and selling a home typically involves plenty of opportunity for worry! I think that’s probably normal, but it’s got me thinking about other things that cause me to lose sleep.
Hopefully, you don’t lay awake at night thinking up evil plans, but don’t let yourself off the hook too quickly. Consider for a moment: What keeps you awake at night?
Evidently, materialism was a great sin in Israel that God spoke against through His prophet Micah. These folks lay awake at night thinking and plotting how they might steal property from the poor among them, building their wealth while burdening the less fortunate. With hindsight, we can quickly conclude that their nighttime plans to plot evil reflected poisonous sin in their souls.
But as always, we’re much slower to notice wickedness in our own souls. It would be a good practice to slow down and meditate on the things that have been keeping you awake at night lately. Let us invite God’s Spirit to renovate our hearts, minds, and dreams. Wouldn’t it be great if we began to lay awake at night thinking and plotting how we might expand God’s kingdom?
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for sometimes dwelling too much on material things. Lord, help me to think about things that bring honor to you and expand your kingdom; renovate my mind!
