Amos Chapter 2
Scripture Reading: Read Amos Chapter 2.
When Even Spiritual Leadership Fails:
Amos 2:12-13 - “But you made the Nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets not to prophesy. “Now then, I will crush you as a cart crushes when loaded with grain.” (NIV)
One of the intriguing aspects of Amos is how he initially addresses the nations surrounding Judah and Israel before turning his attention to the people of God. We often find it easier to agree with a preacher who highlights the sins of others; it’s when he begins to point out our own sins that we start to feel uncomfortable.
In the latter half of chapter two, the word of judgment shifts toward the Northern Kingdom of Israel. God will, without a doubt, send judgment on the pagan nations surrounding Israel. Even the southern kingdom of Judah will experience judgment for its sins. But Israel is not off the hook; they will be judged for their many sins.
Here, we can see how deep the impact of sin has become in Israel. The Nazirites and Prophets, who should’ve been marked by righteousness and faithfulness, are doing the opposite. These spiritual leaders are no longer spiritual, which reflects the depth of wickedness in Israel. God will send judgment upon Israel for their many sins.
Prayer: Lord, give me a tender, responsive spirit so that I am quick to repent and walk in the way of righteousness.
