Even Farmers Get Vision:
Amos 1:1 – “The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.” (NIV)
The prophet Amos, a shepherd from the lesser-known Tekoa, was a surprising choice. Tekoa, a small farming community, was different from the typical birthplace for a prophet. Yet, despite his humble origins, this country farmer delivers a message of such power and significance that it resonates with a force that transcends his background. God, in His wisdom, chooses this unlikely prophet to deliver a message of great importance, a testament to the divine choice and the power of the message.
Amos's hometown is of little importance in the grand scheme of things; what truly matters is the message God has given through him and his unwavering faithfulness in delivering that message. Despite being a country farmer, Amos was entrusted with a powerful message from God, a message he was faithful to deliver. This underscores the importance of obedience in our spiritual growth and the impact it can have on others.
What can we learn from Amos, the country farmer turned prophet?
We don’t know all the details of Amos's becoming a prophet, but evidently, he was a spiritual man who listened to God’s voice and walked in faith. The Lord uses Amos, remarkably, as a courageous prophet to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Likewise, if we listen to God’s voice and walk in faithfulness, God will use our faithfulness to expand His kingdom in remarkable ways.
