Zechariah 14

Scripture Reading:  Read Zechariah Chapter 14.

Zombie Apocalypse:

Zechariah 14:12 – “This is the plague with which the LORD will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.” (NIV)

There is a current obsession with zombies in our culture.  I can’t say I’m really into Zombies or understand it very well.  Who would’ve thought, however, that the Bible spoke of the living dead even hundreds of years before Christ came to the earth?  God’s word is full of surprises, and this is undoubtedly one of them.

Zechariah prophesies of the second coming of Christ; the events of this chapter are yet in the future. We read here of the destruction of the enemies of God and the salvation of a remnant of Jewish people who will turn to the Lord in faith. This particular verse has in view some major battle that takes place in Jerusalem and a plague that is sent against the enemies of God.

I can’t help but think of the words of the Apostle Paul in Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NIV)

This death that Paul speaks of can be understood as an ultimate death and a living death.  We may not be around to see this plague Zechariah speaks of, but it gives us an awful image of what sin does to someone.  I do believe this will be fulfilled literally one day.  Until then, let us be reminded that the only hope for our dead and rotting flesh is to turn to the Lord Jesus for new life.
